Hörnum Odde

Hörnum is located on the southern tip of Sylt. Here you will find the Hörnum Odde, a dune and heath landscape covering the southern tip, leading to the sea.

This area of Sylt is heavily affected and endangered by the tides. In the past, it took between three and four hours to take a tour around the Hörnum Odde, today it takes half as long.
This area, a mere two kilometres long, has been a conservation area since 1972. To prevent more erosion and degradation due to surges and tides, steps are being taken to reclaim the land. Shoreface nourishment and tetrapods – concrete structures made in the shape of tetrahedrons to protect the coastline – are used to prevent further loss of land.

If you would like to know more about this endangered area, you can take one of the guided tours organised by the information centre “Wadden Sea Conservation Station”. Here you can get lots of background knowledge of and deep insights into coastal preservation on tideland, beach and dune tours and during slide shows.
